The "Loonie Lines for Holiday Food Hampers" project, coordinated by the Student Ambassadors and the Alumni Association, won a significant award from the international Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The ambassadors received the 1999 CASE Seal of Excellence Award in Alumni Programming for their model student program, along with $2,500 US. Fifteen student ambassadors volunteered to lead the fundraising campaign, which filled 102 hampers for needy students. They placed strips of double-sided tape in buildings throughout the campus over lunch hours in late November and December, and encouraged staff and students to place their loonies on the line. The CASE Seal of Excellence Award puts the U of M in a category with such institutions as UCLA, Notre Dame, Cornell, Purdue, Penn State and Georgia Tech. CASE is an international organization of professionals in alumni relations, public affairs, fundraising and student recruitment.
As well, Raymond Gramada, Derek Papegnies, and Nicole
Trembath, three of the Loonie Lines' student campaign leaders, were
awarded $1,000 bursaries under the provincial Youth Serves Manitoba award
program based on their leadership of this project.
