Welcome to the University of Manitoba Actuarial Club (UMAC)! We, the UMAC Executive, will do our best to ensure you get as much out of your university experience as possible, through various activities and programs, both academic and career-oriented, and tons of UMAC social events!
Many of our successful academic events and programs are continuing to grow this year! Interest Theory study sessions in the fall and winter will continue to help first time actuarial students prepare for tests and coursework. The Manual Exchange Program will also be a useful resource throughout your actuarial studies, for free textbooks, study manuals and more! This year, we are introducing a new Excel Workshop in the fall, to help members brush up on the Excel skills needed both in their actuarial classes and on the job!
UMAC also provides many occasions for members to prepare for their future actuarial careers. The “What is an Actuary?" event will give new members an introduction into the world of actuarial math, and give senior students a more in-depth discussion of career possibilities. Speed Interviews will be held right before internship and full-time job interviews, allowing members to brush up on their interview skills. Finally, the Fish Dinner, UMAC’s biggest networking event of the year, will give members the opportunity to network with industry reps, all the while enjoying a great dinner amongst their professors and peers.
But what students really want to study and work all day and night? Not UMAC students! So, we will be hosting tons of social activities throughout the year! From barbeques, a Christmas party, bowling, karaoke, poker tournaments, and more, there’s something that everyone will enjoy.
If you want to get more involved than just being a member, consider joining our Mentorship Program as a mentee or mentor! This year, the Mentorship Program will not only pair incoming students with a senior student mentor, but also any year students looking to gain support in finding an actuarial internship. Whether it’s discussing the interview process, getting resume advice, or learning about someone else’s internship experience, we’ll pair you with someone to give you that extra edge and advice to nail your interview. You can also join our new Volunteer Committee this year, to get involved in helping out with UMAC events!
Keep checking the UMAC Newsletter for more info on upcoming events, academic and career tips, and your fellow students’ experiences on the job! If you have any questions about UMAC, or the actuarial major in general, please send us an email at email@example.com. We look forward to meeting you all soon!
- The UMAC Executive Team.
The University of Manitboa Actuarial Club (UMAC) is focused on developing a network for actuarial students at the University of Manitoba. Our goals are to create an awareness of developments in the actuarial field, and connect students with potential employers. We also organize many social activities that allow members to get to know each other, and have some fun while taking a break from studying.
We host the Annual Fish Dinner, which draws attendance from the professional community across Canada, and features a guest speaker from the industry. Take advantage of a great opportunity, learn about the SOA exams and meet some terrific people. If you have any questions, or would like to learn more about UMAC, visit us in room 123 Drake Centre or send us an email.
