Incoming & Current International Students

The University of Manitoba is pleased to have over 2,500 international students from more than 90 countries that have chosen to pursue their undergraduate or graduate degrees here. International students enrich the learning experiences of all students by bringing diverse perspectives to classes, research, laboratories and to student life in general. International students help to make the University of Manitoba a truly global community.
We hope that you, as an international student, feel at home here at the University of Manitoba. We want to give you every encouragement and support to help you succeed in your studies and achieve the goals you have set for yourself. From the very first minutes when you step off the plane, to the day you don your graduation cap and gown to receive your University of Manitoba degree, we want you to know that you are important to us and a valuable part of our university’s present and future.
“International students are important because they bring a glimpse of their own worlds to our classrooms and residences in the heart of the North American continent. Peer-to-peer learning is informal, but it can have a profound influence on what Canadian students think and feel about other nations and their societies. International students, in a sense, are like ambassadors of their countries when they study here, and their presence requires our students to think about cultural values and differing notions of what constitutes "human nature", for example. Not all encounters are easy either, whether our students study abroad, or international students study here, for living in another country requires adjustment. Encountering differences and effectively dealing with them is at the heart of the maturation process, as students learn to sift experiences and find explanations for what they heard, saw and experienced.” Emőke Szathmáry, University of Manitoba President, The Bulletin, November 2002.
