International Experience Beyond Degree Credit

“My encouragement to everyone is that we all can make a difference by becoming the difference we want to see in the world.” Sheila Omom, U of M student in Human Ecology who worked with Aids orphans in Kenya, summer 2005.
Here are some of the ways you might find an international experience....either at home or abroad:
1. Volunteer Opportunities at the UM: Did you know that the world comes to the University of Manitoba? Look around. Nearly 10% of our student body comes from countries other than Canada. There are lots of ways that you can become familiar with another country and culture simply by being a friend to an international student here.
1.1 International Centre for Students: Be a campus Buddy, volunteer at the Star Lake Cross Cultural Orientation, help an international student practice their English skills… there are lots of ways you can help… and be helped in becoming internationally-minded.
1.2 University 1: The first year of university can be challenging, especially as an international student. U1 has developed programs and supports especially for international students and they would love to involve you too!
1.3 International or ethno-cultural student groups: Each year UMSU supports nearly 100 different student groups on campus. Look for a group that meets around interests related to a particular country/culture, traveling or even exchange alumni.
2 World WISE Resource Centre: Here is an opportunity you don’t want to miss! The World WISE Resource Centre is located inside the International Centre for Students and it is filled to the brim with books, magazines, flyers, brochures, postings, anecdotes, cd’s, pictures and lots of friendly, enthusiastic students who love to travel. Want to volunteer in sub-Saharan Africa? Would love to find a job in Australia? An internship in France is just the ticket to start your career? This is definitely the place to come… and stay a while. Located at 541 University Centre.
3. Student Employment Centre : Career and Employment Services assists all undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Manitoba with career planning and job search issues. Visit the Centre at 474 University Centre to check for overseas opportunities and postings.
4. Asper Career Services The I.H. Asper School of Business Career Services Centre assists Asper School students and alumni with job placement and skill development activities related to their career search. Visit the Centre at 144 Drake Centre to check for overseas opportunities and postings.
5. SWAP Program: This program is offered through Travel CUTS, a service of the Canadian Federation of Students. SWAP gives you the supports you need to find a job in another country. If you’ve ever wanted to travel, live abroad, but didn’t know how to go about it… this is a great way to get you going! Visit Travel Cuts at the University of Manitoba on the first floor of University Centre Bldg for more information about this and other travel opportunities.
