International Opportunities for University Credit

University Credit International Experience:
“An exceptional education of lasting value and relevant to the 21st Century [a strategic goal of the University of Manitoba] requires knowledge and skills that have global application and convey international understanding.” Report of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on International Relations, Feb 2004.
"Studying in Australia was the best experience of my life. The places I traveled, people I met, and things I saw have changed me for the better, in ways I can’t describe.” Stacey Morgan, Human Ecology student on exchange to Australia.
The University of Manitoba recognizes the value that international experience brings to our degree programs and will grant University credit for a number of different types of programs abroad. Follow the links below to find more information on the different programs and contact information for people you can meet to talk about how these opportunities might work for you.
There are 5 ways to obtain international experience for credit
1. University of Manitoba Student Exchanges: The University of Manitoba signs agreements with various universities abroad that allow you to have an overseas education for at-home prices. Currently we have over 50 active student exchange agreements around the world on nearly every continent. Some exchanges are open to students from all faculties, some are open to students in just one or two faculties. Check the links below to find one in your program area. Don’t forget to ask about any scholarships that can help off-set the costs of international travel!
1.1 International Centre for Students Exchange Program: ICS manages all university-wide student exchange agreements (i.e. multiple faculty) as well as a number of single discipline exchanges on behalf of several faculties (Arts, Architecture, Science, etc.)
1.2 Faculty Based Student Exchanges Some Faculties at the University of Manitoba have chosen to manage student exchanges for students registered in their Faculty programs. If you are uncertain whether your Faculty does this or not, please inquire at your Faculty’s Dean’s Office.
2. University of Manitoba Travel Study Courses: These are U of M courses taught by U of M professors in locations other than our Winnipeg campuses. They run from a few days to several weeks and generally take place over the summer months. Contact Extended Education for details on destinations, application, fees and credit.
3. Independent Study Abroad: There are many qualified and accredited universities around the world that would welcome you to come and study for a while, then transfer credits back to your U of M degree program. Discover resources on campus, such as the International Centre for Students to help find the program that fits for you.
4. Co-op programs with international placement opportunity: A number of degree programs here at the U of M allow students to apply for entry to Co-op programs. These programs provide opportunity for students to complement their academic study with paid work experience in their field of study. If you are registered in a degree program that has a Co-op program component, ask about the possibility of an overseas placement.
5. Internationalizing your degree here at home!: Consider taking courses right here at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, either as core program requirements or as electives, that will add an international perspective to your degree. Some options you might consider are:
5.1 Language courses The Language Centre works in close collaboration with all language departments and provides facilities and support to more than 15 language programs, including the Asian Studies Centre, the English Language Studies, French, Spanish, & Italian, German and Slavic Studies, Icelandic, Linguistics, Native Studies. Consider developing or enhancing your skill in a second (or third or fourth!) language to gain one of the primary skills of cross-cultural competency: communication!
5.2 Courses with international or cross-cultural content Many courses in numerous fields and disciplines across the University of Manitoba will contribute directly to your understanding of the world. Look for courses with a global or cultural content in the University of Manitoba course calendar.
University of Manitoba TESL Certificate Program For individuals seeking training in teaching English as a second language to adults or to children, the Extended Education Division and the Faculty of Education now offer a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL).
